The Stuart, or Stewart, dynasty, long established in Scotland , was not very successful in England ,especially by comparison with Tudors .In spite of inheriting a Crown that seemed more secure than any other in Europe ,two of the four Stuart kings lost it,and one of them,Charles I ,lost his head as well .Fora time (the first and last time since the Anglo-Saxons ),Britain had no Monarchy at all .

The Stuart monarchs all had defects of character .In some cases the defects where not only highly apparent but politically dangerous .All the same, the unfortunate record of the dynasty cannot be ascribed to such simple causes alone.
